Hi! My name is Gennadiy. I am Russian with Ukrainian citizenship, and I also have a permanent residency in Argentina. All Argentinean people always ask for the Russians “What does your rare name mean? Would you translate it in castellano por favor (Spanish, please)?” I answer joking “It means “Una persona noble” (noble man), but this is an ancient Greek name only and nothing, nothing else”…  I am a scientist, ichthyologist (PhD), who has dedicated many years of life to the ice-cold, but Beautiful Antarctica, and to study systematics and biology of Antarctic fish. Tropical flora and ornamental blooming plants recently are my passion that somewhat warms my soul.

Rain Lily, Zephyr Flower Zephyrantes grandiflora (Amaryllidaceae)Rain Lily, Zephyr Flower Zephyrantes grandiflora (Amaryllidaceae) is widely distributed in Argentina as an escape plantThe main purpose of this site is to reflect the beauty of the world I live in. I want to show plants in wilderness or cultivated as outdoor ornamental plants, regardless of whether their flowers are used for decorative purposes or not. I've used macroscanning and macrophotographing to show small details, which generally could not be seen by naked eye.

From time to time, I enrich my photo galleries ("Trees and Shrubs" and "Flowers and Vines") with pictures of plants from my patio (back yard) in the neighborhood of Villa Ballester in Megapolice of Buenos Aires or from other places. Site's renovations you can find on the Update page.

The most of pictures include my articles about plants, cultivated in Argentina on open air and known in Russia as indoor, balcony and orchard plants. I've not used the full description of Russian well-known plants, but instead I've given reference from other internet sources.

At the same time I give brief descriptions, review and some kind of discussion based on my own experience, knowledge and special literature, of barely known in Russia and Ukraine species.

I have included my own observations of plants in Buenos Aires, along with compiled information from other regions of warm climates, of very rare for Russia but common for Argentina species, in their natural climate. I have enriched those observations and information with new experience in indoor cultivating of a few rare for Russia species, which I brought as gifts to Kaluga, Russia and Kharkiv, Ukraine in summer of 2002.

Flowers & Vines

Floss Silk Tree (Drunken Tree) Chorisia insignis is native to NE ArgentinaIn the current time these articles are available only in Russian. However, navigation links are in English such as the all pictures have the Pop Up notes in English. Each topic has links to references (mainly in English) and additional pictures in internet. Choice of species for this virtual collection is upon my personal taste and preference.

You can search plants by images clicking on pictures or by Latin and common names of species. Common names are on 3 languages: Russian, English and Argentinean Spanish. Scientific names are on Russian and Latin. In Latin name of each taxon I tried to use last systematic changes. I also used most common synonymy of the species.

I am very grateful to the wonderful, kindest women - Marina Aleksandrovna Hoerschelmann-Aksakow (Buenos Aires, Argentina) for her kindness and generosity to me and my botanic experiments. Without all this, perhaps, this site would not exist. I also grateful to my friend Misha Makeyev from Kaluga, Russia, the passionate plant's lover, who has given me the essential impulse to develop this site.
